The Chuckbox opened its doors in 1972 and the Tempe staple has been feeding generations of families and many ASU students and faculty ever since.

Grandparents now bring their grandchildren to The Chuckbox.

In Facebook post on July 1, The Chuckbox announced its 50th anniversary and thanked supporters. Customers responded in the comments with memories and many said they serve the best burger in the Valley.

Karen McGuire wrote: “Been going since my ASU days in the 80’s…You fed this poor college student in the ’80s thru my retirement!” Julie Davis posted: “I’ve been enjoying the burgers at Chuckbox for almost 50 years.” And GQ Negro added: “I drive from Tucson just to eat here and bring as many people as I can... Amazing place amazing people. Arizona is lucky to have you guys.”

At the cash-only restaurant, customers can watch their burgers cook on a mesquite grill and use the condiment bar to customize their burgers, which range from the ⅓-pound Big One to a 1½-pound Triple Great Big One.

A broiled chicken sandwich and a vegetarian burger are also available.

The restaurant notably provides free cab rides to help prevent customers from drinking and driving. A line at the bottom of the menu reads: “Be safe. Never Drink and Drive! Ask your server for a free taxi home!”

According to the post, The Chuckbox won't be going anywhere anytime soon. "Today's the day. We officially turn 50! Thank you to everyone who has helped us reach this huge milestone," it reads. "Here is to many more years of continued success."

In honor of its 50th anniversary, The Chuckbox will have T-shirts and campfire coffee mugs in white, green and red available for sale throughout July.
